Policy makers, industry and business
NERC use its budget of about £400m to fund environmental science both in universities and within our own research centres. Some of our research is targeted at key environmental issues and is funded through our directed programmes. Our blue skies funding programmes address many cutting edge scientific issues and create new knowledge that can be of unexpected, practical value.
We are keen to make our advances in science and technology available to potential users, and to increase the economic impact of our research. Much of our work is directly relevant to policy makers - it was scientists at NERC's British Antarctic Survey who discovered the ozone hole that led to the Montreal Protocol on CFCs. For business and industry, the results of our research can lead directly to new products and services or we can support existing activities by, for example, providing environmental data or collaborating with you in research.
NERC's Science Impacts Database acts as a repository of case studies which demonstrate the ways in which NERC science has had an impact, or has the potential for impact, on policy development or industry and business. Visit science impacts to see how NERC works with its external partners, and to see case studies of successful developments that are based on our environmental science.
