Strategic Environmental Science Capital Investments

As part of the new process for prioritising capital investments, NERC has been looking at new ways to fund much needed scientific equipment across its research community through strategic capital investments.

2016-17 Strategic Capital Investments

In February 2016 NERC agreed £10 million in capital to support existing and future research programmes, including NERC’s recently commissioned ambitious, multi-centre National Capability science.

2014 Strategic Environmental Science Capital Call

In October 2014 NERC allocated £8·4 million for investment, to be spent by March 2016. Eligible research organisations were invited to submit up to three proposals (with a minimum value of £100,000 per proposal, but not exceeding a combined total value of £500,000) for capital assets (for science, innovation, estates, IT, facilities).

Proposals were required to demonstrate how the capital asset would support world-class environmental science, aligned with NERC's remit and strategic priorities, and have potential to stimulate innovation and economic impact.

2013 Strategic Environmental Science Capital Call

In October 2013 NERC conducted a pilot review of requirements for strategic capital and allocated £6·5 million for investment. Eligible research organisations (ROs) were contacted directly and invited to submit one proposal for up to three capital items (not exceeding a total value of £500,000).

The proposal was required to demonstrate how the capital asset(s) would support peer-reviewed environmental science activities and align with NERC remit and strategic priorities.
