Knowledge exchange - definition
The term knowledge exchange covers the processes by which knowledge, expertise and skilled people exchange between the NERC science base and its user communities to contribute to the economic competitiveness of the UK, effectiveness of public services and policy, and quality of life.
This definition includes the five main types of knowledge produced by NERC-funded scientists.
- Knowledge normally presented in scientific papers or at scientific meetings.
- Knowledge that can be commercialised (based on the ownership of intellectual property).
- Tacit knowledge (also called know-how) concerned with the methodology used in scientific processes or experiments.
- Pieces of scientific knowledge, or observations of a scientific nature, that by themselves are not enough to constitute a scientific paper, but could be key pieces of information for other scientists or users of science.
- Knowledge produced as scientific advice or evidence for policymakers or other users of NERC science.
NERC's exchange of knowledge between the science base and the public is covered by NERC's Science & Society Policy.
