Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami
a knowledge exchange case study
A number of NERC centres, most notably the British Geological Survey (BGS), volunteered information and advice in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami in December 2004. In response to a government request, NERC identified appropriate scientists from geosciences, development and ocean communities who could help provide advice.
BGS participated in a symposium a few weeks after the tsunami to identify issues with which its scientists could help. A number of them went to the affected area in February 2005 to help with sediment and land-mapping and water-supply requirements. BGS has since been involved in developing a tsunami warning system and, with the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS), in contributing to the work of the government's Natural Hazard Working Group.
