Elephant seals

a knowledge exchange case study

Southern Elephant seals were used to provide temperature and salinity profiles across the Southern Ocean.

The aim of the research was to develop a method of measuring ocean parameters using elephant seals with transmitters, and so to develop greater understanding of the Southern Ocean and the transfer of heat between this region and other oceans of the world.

Funding was through Connect B (predecessor to Partnership Research Grants) and matched by the Department of the Navy (USA).
