Geospatial Acquisition Visualisation & Analysis (GAVA)
a knowledge exchange case study
GAVA is a tool developed to enable the visualisation and analysis of data from Global Positioning System (GPS)/Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping methodologies. By using GAVA, digital data from a variety of sources (eg geospatially referenced field data, laser scans, remotely sensed imagery and seismic data) can be incorporated directly into a single data model.
The users are field-based industries such as mining, petroleum exploration and construction, as well as companies offering surveying or geotechnical services. The principal investigator identified a number of collaborating companies which would benefit.
Notable outputs from the research:
- Development of digital data systems for geospatial research
- Portable visualisation system
- Formation of a spin-out company:
Geospatial Research Ltd, spun out from Durham University in 2004
Funding sources:
- Realising Our Potential Award (ROPA)
- Ocean Margins Link and tied studentship
- British Geological Survey University Collaboration Advisory Committee (UCAC)
- Industrial CASE studentship
- Follow-on Fund
