Work shadow placement opportunities

Researchers are responsible for initiating their own work shadow arrangements. The host partner organisation must be a relevant user of NERC research such as a government department, public agency or charity. This scheme does not cover placements with private sector bodies, but such arrangements may be eligible via the knowledge exchange call.

Placements are for up to one month and NERC will pay travel and subsistence only. The scheme was originally set up and trialled by NERC's Rural Environment and Land Use (RELU) programme.

Eligibility

Work shadowing placements are suitable for researchers and other staff involved in environmental science research at any stage of their career, excluding students.

Duration

The funded period for a work shadowing placement is up to four weeks. This does not need to be taken in one block, but can be taken over a period of three months.

Location

Work shadowers would be expected to spend 100 per cent of their placement at the partner organisation.

Conditions of work

All placement work shadowers must adhere to NERC's requirements of independence from political or commercial interest through the placement. Work shadowers may be required to respect a confidentiality agreement, specifying that data on policy advice and internal debate will not be disclosed without prior written agreement of the partner organisation departments.

Funding arrangements

During the placement, the work shadower will remain employed by her/his institution. NERC will cover travel and subsistence costs for the placement up to a maximum of £500 per week and £2,000 in total. NERC will pay actual costs after the completion of the placement, with appropriate receipts.

Management and supervision

The partner organisation department will nominate a line manager to whom the work shadower will report. NERC will nominate a contact person (within the Knowledge Exchange (KE) group at Swindon) who should be regularly informed about the progress of the placement.
