Natural hazards

Living with Environmental Change logoInvitation to Tender

(Closing date: 7 June 2010)

Tenders are invited to bid to deliver a review on the UK and international natural hazards research landscape.

Funders (NERC, UKCDS, ESRC, DfID, AHRC, EPSRC) are seeking an individual or a small team from a higher education institute, research organisation or limited company to provide a high-level programmatic review of UK and international research funders of natural hazards research, their historical, current and planned programmes of research, their implementation and evaluation to identify broad content and outcomes.

To ensure future UK or international research programmes have maximum value, UK funders have agreed that existing research must be taken into account and there must be a full understanding of the context of any UK research programme proposals in the international research landscape.

In order to provide a full picture the review should cover organisations, their strategies and research programmes supported by the UK, international funders and other leading countries who fund research on natural hazards and their impacts. Other relevant national research should not be excluded, especially if led by countries that are impacted by the natural hazard.

An international review is required for several reasons:

  1. To clarify where there are key research programme gaps and needs.
  2. To inform where there may be opportunities for collaborative/aligned activities at the UK and international level.
  3. To investigate how existing research has influenced policy and "made a difference" in situations where natural hazards have occurred.
  4. To inform UK and international research funding strategies.
  5. To describe the types of funding and their governance available to UK and international researchers.

The outputs will be used to inform future research funding priorities in the UK and internationally and to assist funders to review or refresh their funding strategies. The work could lead to the commissioning of, for example, the production of a number of systematic reviews or new research activities. The UK would also be better informed enabling a stronger voice in its contributions to international initiatives. The successful organisation will be engaged following a competitive selection process.
