Earth system science

Planet Earth is a complex, interconnected system. To build an understanding of the whole system requires an increase in our knowledge of its component parts and the ways these interact.
Theme leader
Professor Tim Jickells is a professor of the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. He is also director of the Laboratory for Global Marine & Atmospheric Chemistry at UEA. As a member of national and international scientific project management teams he has played a leading role in a number of science programmes and sits on a number of scientific boards and committees.
Developing the fourth phase of theme action plans
Professor Tim Jickells will be leaving before the completion of the next phase of theme action plans (TAPs). The fourth phase of TAPs is due to be agreed by NERC Council in May 2013, and theme leaders have already made considerable progress in developing their plans.
NERC will cover the further development of the Earth system science TAPs until May 2013 via the establishment of an ad hoc group. The ad hoc group will work closely with Professor Jickells until his departure. The membership of the ad hoc group is below.
