Exploitation of CMIP5 Capability to Generate Inputs to IPCC AR5

Announcement of Opportunity

Closing date: 16.00 on 10 February 2011

A new generation of Earth System Modelling integrations are currently being run in preparation for the IPCC 5th Assessment Report (AR5). Outputs will be made publicly available via the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5).

Applications are invited for research grants that will perform innovative multi-model analysis of earth system feedbacks and processes using CMIP5, leading to high-impact science and publications that are likely to be influential in AR5.

The CMIP5 model runs and data will provide the potential for new scientific questions to be substantially and quantitatively addressed for the first time. To capitalise on this potential and deliver both significant advances in scientific understanding and more robust IPCC inputs (and ultimately outputs), these model runs/data require further research analyses.

At least six short analysis projects focusing on exploiting the new scientific opportunities presented by CMIP5 are expected to be supported.

Research proposals may request a total NERC contribution of up to £90k.

Because the window of opportunity to analyse CMIP5 model data in time to influence the IPCC AR5 report is short, only named research staff with appropriate expertise may be included. No unnamed PDRA posts or project studentships are possible.

Proposals may be up to one year in duration. The project start date should be as soon as possible in the period April 2011-July 2011.

Scientific requirements are:

  • Proposals must perform innovative multi-model analysis of earth system feedbacks and processes using CMIP5 model runs/data.
  • Proposals must focus on new scientific opportunities presented by the CMIP5 experimental design.
  • Proposals must address specific scientific questions and clearly identify which CMIP5 experiments will be analysed.
  • Proposals must have the potential to produce publications likely to be influential in AR5.
  • Proposals must have the potential for high-impact science and describe appropriate mechanisms to achieve international scientific impact.

The closing date for proposals is 16:00 on Thursday 10 February 2011.

Potential applicants must refer to the Announcement of Opportunity document below for full details.
