What is the NERC Marine Facilities programme?

The NERC Marine Facilities programme covers all of the seagoing scientific services and facilities for which NERC provides infrastructure and capital funding in order that they can be provided 'free at the point of use' to the NERC community.

The programme includes approximately 600 sea days a year on the Research Ship Unit's (RSU's) two ships, the RRS James Cook (previously the RRS Charles Darwin) & the RRS Discovery, approximately 60 NERC sea days a year on the British Antarctic Survey's (BAS's) ship, the RRS James Clark Ross, and time used of the recognised NERC facility RV Prince Madog run by the joint venture company, VT Ocean Sciences (VTOS).

The NERC Marine Facilities programme is developed by NERC in consultation with NMF Sea Systems and BAS.

The Cruise Programme Review Group will report to the NERC Director of Science & Innovation (the 'proxy customer') who will consult with the Director of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, the Director of NERC Swindon Office and the Director of BAS, as appropriate.

Remit of the Cruise Programme Review Group

The NERC Cruise Programme Review Group exists to provide objective advice to NERC on all aspects of the operations that make up the NERC Marine Facilities Programme and monitor outputs from these marine services and facilities (eg Post Cruise Assessment forms).

NERC Directors will in turn provide advice to the NERC Science & Innovation Strategy Board, the NERC National Capability Advisory Group and the NERC Executive Board, as appropriate.
