Molecular Spectroscopy Facility
The Molecular Spectroscopy Facility (MSF) provides high-quality absorption, extinction, reflectance and emission spectra from solid, liquid, aerosol and gaseous samples.
Withdrawal of NERC national capability funding
As part of NERC's national capability (NC) prioritisation exercise, Council have agreed to withdraw NERC NC funding for the MSF. Consequently, the MSF will no longer be accepting applications for access as a NERC block-funded facility (effective immediately).
Projects that have already been approved by the NERC MSF Steering Committee will be supported at the level stated in the award letters that have previously been sent to applicants.
The MSF will continue to operate as a NERC recognised facility and researchers applying for new grants may request funds to access the facility by including the MSF costs in financial information entered through Je-S. It is, however, conditional that investigators have contacted the facility directly for detailed advice prior to application submission. Those wishing to undertake short feasibility studies that are not supported by grants should also contact the facility.
While there is demand from the NERC community, the Science & Technology Facilities Council will continue to make the MSF available for environmental research. However, these changes also present an opportunity to expand the facility's user base, by supporting research in science areas that fall within the remits of other research councils.
