The Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) is one of the foremost research institutions carrying out research on marine mammals in the world. With over 40 staff and students, SMRU represents a formidable concentration of expertise and talent in marine mammal research and, more generally, in marine ecology.

SMRU's mission is to carry out fundamental research into the biology of marine mammal predators and, through this, to provide support to NERC so that it can carry out its statutory duty to advise the UK government about the management of seal populations.
