Plymouth Marine Laboratory
Plymouth Marine Laboratory's (PML) research extends from the top of estuaries to the deep ocean. Its core research themes address key environmental issues in marine science:
- biodiversity and sustainable marine ecosystems
- marine biogeochemistry
- environment and health - the sustainable management of the oceans
PML is one of the world's leading centres for ocean acidification research. Until recently this has been a largely ignored aspect of climate change, but is now the focus of intense interest.
PML is an important centre for processing data from Earth observation satellites. Key capabilities include near-real time processing of satellite data over Europe, for example ocean colour data within an hour of reception by NERC's satellite receiving station at Dundee. PML also has global coverage capability through agreements with the European Space Agency and NASA.
PML employs 122 staff and 30 students.
