National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) is one of the world's top five oceanographic research institutions. The centre, which is a collaboration between NERC and the University of Southampton, employs 500 research scientists, lecturing and support staff as well as over 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Scientists at the centre are involved in some of the world's most high profile scientific programmes including the Rapid Climate Change Programme and the Ocean Drilling Program, and were the first, along with scientists from NERC's British Geological Survey, to map the extent of the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004. The centre manages a fleet of research ships for use by marine scientists.
