Note: NERC no longer uses the term 'collaborative centres'. The following former collaborative centre has ceased operation after coming to the end of its life, so this page is preserved for reference purposes only.
Environmental science problems are so complex it is now essential to tackle them collaboratively. Grid computing provides a way of doing this efficiently. Grid computing allows people to share a wide variety of computing resources - supercomputers, computer clusters, storage systems, data sources or instruments - as if they were a single, unified resource for solving large-scale, data intensive problems.
The National Institute for Environmental eScience (NIEeS) was a collaboration between the NERC and the University of Cambridge and was based in the Department of Earth Sciences in Cambridge.
NIEeS addressed these environmental problems by promoting and supporting the use of e-Science in environmental research through workshops, short courses, training events and demonstration projects.
One of the successes of the UK e-Science programme was the use of the Access Grid. This is an audio/video conference tool which is able to support many simultaneous sessions.
