Centre for Population Biology

The Centre for Population Biology (CPB) was an NERC funded collaborative centre, established in 1989 to increase knowledge of how ecological systems function.

Its scientific aims were:

  • To study the fundamental ecological processes which link individuals, populations and whole communities of plants, animals and micro-organisms.
  • To improve the scientific basis for understanding and predicting ecological processes, and the consequences of human impacts upon ecosystems.
  • To show how this knowledge can be applied to the rational management of the environment, with benefits for the quality of life and economic sustainability.
  • To train young post-graduate (PhD) and post-doctoral scientists.

The centre was funded mainly by NERC and was hosted by Imperial College London. CPB's total operating budget of approximately £1·3m per annum included further competitive grants and contracts from a variety of research sponsors, including UK research councils and government departments, European Framework funding and charities.

CPB staff:

  • 26 directly employed research and support staff;
  • PhD students;
  • undergraduate students in work experience schemes;
  • research staff associates (within Imperial College and in other organisations);
  • Academic visitors and scientific collaborators in other organisations worldwide.
