Resource Recovery From Waste: Challenges for the health of the environment

A major programme of research is proposed to develop the strategic science needed to ensure that future technologies that recover resources such as energy, minerals and nutrients from waste reduce pressures on natural resource use and do not inflict environmental damage or harm people's health.
The programme aims to achieve a paradigm shift in the recovery of resources from waste, so that it starts to be driven by environmental benefits integrated across air, land and water and by considerations of human health, rather than by economics alone.
