Open call: Chair of UK IODP Programme Advisory Group
Closing date 16:00 on 24 July 2013
IODP is an international marine research programme implemented by a multidisciplinary partnership of scientists and research institutions, all dedicated towards exploring Earth's history and structure recorded in sub-seafloor sediments and rocks. The UK participates in IODP as an integral member of the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD), which together with the US and Japan, supports IODP research. The new phase of IODP - the International Ocean Discovery Programme - begins on 1 October 2013.
The UK-IODP research programme provides support for UK participation within IODP through the provision of grants and coordination, in order to derive the maximum possible scientific benefit from NERC's subscription to IODP.
The new UK-IODP programme will run for five years (2013 - 2018) after which time the renewal of the research programme will be subject to review.
The UK IODP Programme Advisory Group (PAG), which is made up of experts from within the UK science community, including representatives from the IODP international advisory panels, provides a link to the wider UK community and advises the Programme Executive Board (PEB) on the delivery of the UK-IODP research programme. The PAG is required to support the delivery of the programme (eg via the timely assessment of moratorium award proposals), keeping informed about developments with international IODP (including sharing information from international advisory panel meetings); advising and supporting UK-IODP scientific workshops and conferences; advising on and helping develop knowledge exchange and user engagement plans; and, importantly, to work with the PEB to develop a strong case for the renewal of the research programme in 2018.
The PAG Chair will work on behalf of the whole UK-IODP community and will, amongst other things:
- Chair PAG meetings (one or two annually), facilitating discussions and consensus-based decisions on advice to feedback to the PEB and NERC;
- represent the PAG on the PEB and feedback advice;
- work with NERC and the UK-IODP Science Coordinator as required;
- develop relationships with the ICDP programme and other comparable science initiatives
- take a lead role in developing the case for the renewal, and advising on research priorities of the next phase of UK-IODP prior to 2018;
This is an invitation for expressions of interest from those interested in taking on the role of Chair of the PAG for a five year fixed term.
This opportunity is open to UK based individuals with the relevant background who are able to make the necessary commitment to the UK-IODP research programme.
NERC will cover all reasonable travel and subsistence costs incurred through PAG Chair responsibilities. Limited day-rate funding may be available if the PAG Chair is not in a salaried position.
Expressions of Interest will consist of a letter outlining your interest and relevant expertise in the role. Applicants may also attach a CV (no more than four sides A4 in 12 point Times New Roman or Arial font) in support of their application.
Applications should be submitted as email attachments to David Roberts by 16:00 on 24 July 2013.
Expressions of Interest will be assessed by a panel and the successful applicant will be announced in August 2013.
