UK IODP
Announcement of opportunity - Site Survey Investigations (SSIs)
Closing date for full bids: Thursday 9 June 2011
Closing date for outline bids (Heading A only): Thursday 14 April 2011
To support UK membership in the international Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), NERC runs a UK research programme to enable:
- UK scientists to ensure that IODP carries out the best and highest priority science;
- UK scientists to participate in and obtain material from drilling legs; and
- UK scientists to capitalise on the results of IODP drilling and UK technologies, allowing them to benefit from technological advances in deep sea drilling.
The aim of this round of Site Survey Investigations is to maximise funding from the second phase of UK IODP (2008-2013) to deliver useful research information to aid UK scientists in a new programme of research drilling.
In this Announcement of Opportunity funding applications are sought under two headings:
- Outline Bids for Ship-Borne Site Survey Investigations (full bids to be invited following Outline Bid evaluation)
- Full proposals for 'Virtual' Site Surveys (land-based site survey investigations using already collected seismic data with no ship-time)
Any proposed project will be expected to build on existing research efforts within IODP and expected outputs should include high profile scientific paper(s) and/or further proposals.
Applications must be associated with an IODP drilling proposal which has already been submitted to IODP and which has high-level UK involvement, particularly those with a UK Lead Proponent.
The total funding available under this round is £2·5m (this being NERC's 80% contribution to full economic costs, and including indexation). Applicants should contact Amy Vitale for details.
Applicants should be aware of the revised arrangements for requests for equipment purchase in line with new RCUK guidance
. The revised guidance and procedures are also detailed in the NERC Research Grants Handbook.
How to apply
The closing date for outline bids for ship-borne site surveys is 14 April 2011 and for full 'virtual' site surveys and invited ship-borne site surveys is 9 June 2011.
Proposals should be submitted at full economic cost via the research councils' Joint electronic-Submission system (Je-S).
