Towards a Sustainable Energy Economy - UK Energy Research Centre
Programme background
The Towards a Sustainable Energy Economy (TSEC) programme's activities are:
- The UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) - providing a focus for energy research in the UK and for international collaboration.
- Keeping the nuclear option open - addressing some of the key issues in nuclear fission power.
- Managing uncertainties - the socio-economic challenges and implications of moving towards a sustainable energy economy.
- Carbon management and renewables - research taking a whole systems approach.
Three research councils (EPSRC, ESRC and NERC) received £28m joint funding from April 2003, of which some £12m was used to set up UKERC.
The programme has now become part of the Research Councils' Energy Programme, managed through EPSRC. The research is building on other work, such as that at the Tyndall Centre, and under EPSRC's Sustainable Power Generation & Supply programme (SUPERGEN). Research also links closely with organisations such as the Carbon Trust and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (DBIS).
