Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange

Announcement of Opportunity

Closing date: 16:00 on 16 December 2010

Consortium proposals are invited to deliver the Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange research programme. A single consortium will be awarded to deliver the programme in its entirety; this is expected to be an integrated programme capable of making progress across the range of inter-related requirements identified and engaging with the wider UK and international communities.

This £3·6m programme directly relates to the delivery of NERC strategy, in particular the Earth system science, climate system and technologies themes, and is expected to make a significant contribution to Living With Environmental Change (LWEC).

The overarching objective of the Ocean Shelf-Edge Exchange research programme is:

"To improve our fundamental understanding of shelf edge processes which influence the environmental conditions of coastal seas."

To deliver this objective, this programme will examine the fundamental physical processes of exchanges between the edge of the coastal shelf and the open ocean, and will improve understanding of shelf edge exchange processes in different shelf environments in order to allow these processes to be better incorporated into models.

A workshop will be held on 24 September 2010 at the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool to ensure the research community are aware of the national capability available to support research of this type in terms of facilities, infrastructure, modelling, etc.

The workshop will also allow participants to discuss science challenges and possible approaches to undertaking the research, as well as opportunities for collaboration and partnership.

Please register for the workshop by completing the online registration form by 16:00 on 17 September 2010.

Attendance at the workshop is not a prerequisite for submitting a proposal.

Consortium proposals may request a total NERC contribution of up to £3·6m and be up to five years in duration. Applications must be submitted using the Research Councils' Joint Electronic Submission system (Je-S). Please note that it is not necessary to submit a consortium concept note for this programme.

The closing date for proposals is 16:00 on 16 December 2010.

Please see the Announcement of Opportunity document below for full details of the call.
