LINK SeaSense
Programme background
Advanced sensors for ocean applications.
SeaSense was a LINK programme, designed to support innovative pre-competitive research and development of marine sensors in collaboration with industry.
The programme targeted a growing need for new and improved sensors for monitoring and managing the marine environment, including ocean monitoring for environmental change, warning of natural hazards, and defence, waste disposal, ocean resource mapping and seabed exploration, inspection and maintenance of subsea structures, cables and pipelines, and environmental data collection for offshore operations.
LINK SeaSense particularly aimed to create strategic partnerships between science and industry, and adapt and transfer sensor expertise developed by scientists and non-marine industries (both small/medium sized enterprises and large companies).
The priority areas within the programme were:
- optical sensors for the marine environment
- sensors based on fibre optic technology
- solid-state chemical sensors
- cheap, small or disposable sensors
- robust and reliable sensors
- sensor platforms.
