Background and Aims of the meeting
NERC and ESRC, under the auspices of the Global Uncertainties Programme, would like to invite attendance at an interactive workshop on Tuesday 6th September 2011.
NERC and ESRC are allocating up to £5m (at 80% of Full Economic Costing) for the main funding round of the major new interdisciplinary research programme, Increasing Resilience to Natural Hazards (IRNH).
Further information on the IRNH call for research proposals will be available in the Consortium Grant Announcement of Opportunity (AO) which will be published before Friday 12th August. The closing date for applications is November 10th 2011. Further information, specifically that which has informed the main call will be made available on the NERC website when the call is published.
A further call specifically for Knowledge Exchange Fellows will also be published in 2012.

- Two key strategy documents
(the original NERC Natural Hazards Theme Action Plan and the ESRC research case)
The IRNH Town Meeting will be held on the 6th September with its principal aim being to aid the development of research projects and research consortia, which can address the aims and objectives of the IRNH Programme described in the Announcement of Opportunity. The Town Meeting will take the form of a one-day interactive workshop that will address the focus of the call and allow those intending to submit proposals to meet and develop collaborations and multidisciplinary links, and discuss ideas with NERC and the Programme's Advisory Group.
The workshop aims to provide the opportunity to:
- discuss the content of the AO and the scope of the call;
- network and form collaborations/consortia.
This is an opportunity to share ideas and develop collaborations that address the stated research questions. The research projects initiated by this event must fall within NERC's remit to be eligible for NERC funding.
Who should attend
The Town Meeting is intended primarily for prospective research grant applicants responding to the IRNH Announcement of Opportunity, but will also be beneficial for potential Knowledge Exchange Fellows in this research area, potential programme/grant partners and those interested in the programme from the perspective of future engagement including natural hazard research, social policy, disaster risk reduction, health, engineering etc.
Attendance at the workshop will not be a prerequisite for proposal submission, nor a guarantee of funding from the subsequent grants round. It would be highly beneficial for prospective consortium grant applicants to attend.

The Town Meeting will run over one day from 10:00-16:30. The detailed agenda along with names of speakers will be confirmed nearer the date, but event outline is:
