Increasing Resilience to Natural Hazards in Earthquake-prone & Volcanic Regions

Expansion of advisory group

NERC and ESRC are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Peter Sammonds as the Strategic Advisor for the IRNH Programme.

The Strategic Advisor will act as programme 'champion' in the wider community and ensure the main programme grants are fully integrated across all of the programme remit; in particular, building the common elements of hazards 'risk analysis'.

Along with Professor Sammonds, the programme Advisory Group will advise the Programme Executive Board on the delivery of the research programme in such areas as the strategic direction of the programme (including the capacity building phase), the development of the main announcement of opportunity for research projects and the development of user engagement.

The current membership of the Advisory Group is:

  • Professor Peter Sammonds, University College London
  • Dr Jennifer Barclay, University of East Anglia
  • Miss Jessica Camburn, Save the Children and ELHRA
  • Dr Edward Clay, Overseas Development Institute (retired)
  • Professor John McCloskey, University of Ulster
  • Professor Virginia Murray, Health Protection Agency

Preliminary discussions amongst the Advisory Group have revealed that they hold the view that the membership of the group should be expanded to include further representation from the international community.

NERC and ESRC have taken this advice on board and are working with the Advisory Group to identify suitable international candidates in earthquake hazard, volcanic hazard and risk and resilience social science to assist with the international benchmarking of the final programme objectives.
