Increasing Resilience to Natural Hazards in Earthquake-prone & Volcanic Regions
Announcement of Opportunity:
Funding for scoping studies
Closing date: 16:00 on 7 October 2010
The Research Councils UK (RCUK) is commissioning a new interdisciplinary programme of research on resilience and vulnerability to seismic and volcanic-related natural hazards.
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is leading a joint programme with the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) as a contribution to the RCUK 'Global Uncertainties' programme. The new £7m investment will support interdisciplinary, basic, applied and strategic research and will include an important element of capacity building in the first year of funding.
The RCUK invites proposals for first round scoping study awards. The aim of these small studies is to allow potential consortium groups to identify research gaps in seismic and volcanic hazards.
This could comprise, for example, of mapping the current research and community landscape, evaluating the administrative framework within which scientific capacity will be built, building cross-disciplinary working, engaging with local communities, decision-makers and government in potential study regions, and identifying potential opportunities for further collaboration.
Projects are expected to last up to a maximum of four months. A maximum of £200k (at 80% FEC) is available in total for this first stage of the programme, aiming to fund 6-7 projects. The findings of these projects will inform and shape the research programme's second funding opportunity, which will be commissioned in 2011.
Proposals for this call are invited from eligible UK researchers.
The closing date for proposals is 16:00 on Thursday 7 October 2010.
Potential applicants must refer to the Announcement of Opportunity document below for full details.
