Probability, Uncertainty & Risk in the Environment

Programme Brokerage and Network Launch Event

Wednesday 14 September 2011, 12:30-18:00

Lloyd's of London
1 Lime Street, London, EC3M 7HA

Registration closing date: Tuesday 6 September 2011

NERC, EPSRC, the Environment Agency and the Technology Strategy Board under the auspices of the Probability, Uncertainty and Risk in the Environment (PURE) action, would like to invite attendance at a Programme Brokerage and Network Launch Event on Wednesday 14 September 2011. The Industrial Maths Knowledge Transfer Network and the Financial Services Knowledge Transfer Network are hosting the event at Lloyd's of London in central London.

Background and Aims of the Event

The PURE action has been prioritised by NERC in order to increase the impact of NERC natural hazards research, and to take a national leadership role in changing the way in which uncertainty and risk are assessed and quantified across the natural hazards community.

The action has two elements: a research programme - the PURE Programme, and a research and knowledge exchange network - the PURE Network.

PURE Programme Brokerage Event

NERC is allocating up to £2m (total cost to NERC) for a single consortium research grant award to deliver the PURE research programme. Please see the Announcement of Opportunity for further information.

Because enhancing the potential for uptake of Natural Hazards science by users is an essential aspect of the PURE Programme, each consortium bid must have at least one project partner, who may be:

  • private sector companies (non-UK companies must be able to demonstrate a significant presence in the UK) and/or
  • public sector organisations including local, regional and national authorities, regulators, non-departmental public bodies, non-governmental organisations and charities.

The aim of the Programme Brokerage Event is to aid the development of multi-hazard research consortiums and secure engagement from collaborating bodies.

PURE Network Launch Event

The event will also act as the launch event for the PURE Network, a research and knowledge exchange network. Please see the PURE Network website for further information.

The Event

The event will run from 12:30 until 18:00. The detailed agenda along with names of speakers will be confirmed nearer the date, but event outline is:

  • 13:30: Start of the Brokerage Session
