Oceans 2025 science co-ordinator appointed

The Natural Environment Research Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Phillip Williamson as science co-ordinator for the Oceans 2025 strategic research programme in marine science.

Dr Williamson took up his appointment with effect from 1 April 2007.

He will work for 80% of his time co-ordinating Oceans 2025 and will be based at the University of East Anglia.

One of Dr Williamson's first tasks will be to work with the Oceans 2025 and NERC Swindon Office to finalise the details of the new Strategic Ocean Funding Initiative (SOFI) which opens up funds for universities and other partners to participate in Oceans 2025. Other important co-ordination functions include developing a programme implementation plan, and working with key stakeholders to ensure that research benefits are maximised.

Dr Williamson said, "Oceans 2025 is an important and timely innovation in marine science which addresses key strategic priorities. The programme was very highly graded in peer review and has been strongly supported by NERC. I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Oceans 2025 community in research and collaborative centres and universities to help deliver this exciting programme."
