Ocean Margins (LINK)

Programme background

Ocean margins (where the deep oceans meet continental shelves) include the sites of some of the world's largest accumulations of sediments which may provide the source of significant reserves of oil and gas.

The UK, together with Ireland, shares an ocean margin over 1500km in length. We know it contains valuable oil and gas reserves, but we don't yet know its full economic potential.

A clear knowledge of the structure, composition & evolution of ocean margins will not only provide clearer scientific understanding, but is also critical to the wealth & well being of many coastal nations, including the UK.
