Ocean Acidification

Announcement of Opportunity

Living with Environmental Change logoOutline bid proposals are invited to the UK Ocean Acidification Research Programme. This £11m collaborative programme is a Living With Environmental Change (LWEC) accredited programme and is co-funded by NERC and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC).

This integrated programme directly relates to the delivery of the NERC Strategy (Earth System Science and Biodiversity Science Themes) and the UK government's Strategic Objectives with respect to adapting to, and mitigating climate change and ensuring a healthy resilient, productive and diverse natural environment.

The scope and delivery of this programme is detailed in the Science and Implementation Plans, which must be read prior to submission of a proposal. All proposals will be required to directly address the specific deliverables and aims within the programme.

This call is for proposals to address six of the programme's seven deliverables, and specific aims therein. Up to £7·9m is available for this call, according to a pre-determined distribution of funding between the programme aims.

Collaboration at the national level between the different research communities and at the international level with other relevant research programmes, primarily the national German programme BIOACID, is strongly encouraged.

Eligibility for this programme includes the UK government departments' marine laboratories.

The closing date for outline bids is 16:00 on 23 July 2009. Applicants successful at the outline bid stage will be required to attend a workshop on the 25 September 2009. The closing date for full bids is expected to be on the 12 November 2009.

To aid in the development of new collaborations in ocean acidification research, and particularly to help groups develop new partnerships to apply to the recent announcement of opportunity, an Ocean Acidification community area has been set up on the SciSpace.net social networking website.

This area is open to any individual with an interest in ocean acidification research and we would particularly like to encourage those interested in submitting a proposal to the NERC UK Ocean Acidification programme to visit the area. Individuals can use this area to declare an interest to others in any of the specific sections outlined under the call objectives, to search for suitable people to make up a consortium, to advertise themselves or any facilities or services they can provide or to simply keep in touch with other members of the ocean acidification research community.
