Environmental Mathematics and Statistics
Programme background
Using, developing and exploiting mathematics and statistics to solve environmental problems more accurately and effectively.
NERC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) jointly funded the Environmental Mathematics and Statistics programme. NERC wanted to attract mathematicians and statisticians to environmental research, and EPSRC had identified environmental mathematics and statistics as a strategic priority This capacity-building initiative addressed both research council's concerns.
The programme brought mathematical rigour, statistical reasoning and advanced tools to bear on problems in the environmental sciences. It boosted mathematics and statistics within life and environmental science by:
deploying mathematical and statistical methods more effectively to solve real environmental problems.
developing new mathematical, statistical and computational methods to tackle currently intractable environmental problems
fostering effective communication and collaborations between different disciplines.
NERC managed the programme on behalf of both councils.
