Greenhouse Gas Emissions & Feedbacks
Announcement of Opportunity
Closing date: 16:00 on 15 February 2012
Outline proposals are invited for a major new research programme on Greenhouse Gas Emissions & Feedbacks.
This £8·1m programme aims to develop the capability to measure and predict sources and sinks of the major anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHG) and relates directly to the delivery of the climate systems and Earth system science themes of NERC's strategy. The programme will also contribute to Living With Environmental Change.
The overarching aim of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions & Feedbacks programme is to develop the capability to measure and predict sources and sinks of the major anthropogenic greenhouse gases, on spatial scales from sub-national to continental/ocean basins, and on timescales from sub-annual monitoring to 100-year prediction.
This will be achieved via four linked scientific deliverables:
- Development of high resolution estimates of UK GHG sources/sinks, based on in situ GHG measurements and improved global GHG inversions through the exploitation of available data sources.
- Quantify and explain the major ocean GHG sources and sinks and their interannual variability in the North Atlantic.
- Upscaling of small-scale terrestrial process understanding to inform inventories and improve Earth system models.
- Integration of different UK source/sink estimates and programme coordination.
Three of the four deliverables (A to C) will be addressed by this call, and up to £7m of funding is available according to pre-determined distributions between these deliverables.
Deliverable D will be addressed collectively by the successful teams addressing deliverables A to C at an integration workshop.
Proposals for this call are invited from eligible UK researchers; see the NERC Research Grants Handbook for eligibility criteria.
The closing date for outline proposals is 16:00 on 15 February 2012.
Please see the Announcement of Opportunity document below for full details of the call.
