Environmental Genomics
Genes and ecosystem services
The
natural environment provides us with food, medicines, fuel, fibres, timber,
climate regulation, water purification, soil regeneration, nutrient cycling,
water recirculation and crop pollination. We call all of these ecosystem
services.
People need to look after these important resources and understand how they might be affected by environmental change such as deforestation, increasing urban sprawl or soil erosion.
Genomic helps scientists to explore how ecosystems function and also to produce practical tools called 'genome-based sensors' to help with environmental monitoring.
