Data management

The programme needed a robust industry standard platform for data management in place quickly and with minimal risk.

The programme's data are managed collaboratively by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) Oxford, Silicon Genetics (subsequently taken over by Agilent Technologies), Manchester University and Edinburgh University, using both commercial and open-source data management and analysis solutions.

CEH Oxford hosted the programme's initial data centre. When its role was expanded to cover the Post-Genomics and Proteomics programme, it was renamed the NERC Environmental Bioinformatics Centre (NEBC).

Support for environmental genomics (1·12MB)

NEBC has developed an integrated bioinformatics computing environment based on the popular and powerful Linux operating system. The labs of all grant holders were supplied with a high-spec Dell Precision 650 computer to run this bioinformatics-oriented system, known as Bio-Linux.

You can email NEBC's electronic helpdesk, helpdesk@envgen.nox.ac.uk
