Knowledge transfer within the FREE programme

NERC science should identify and provide sustainable solutions to environmental problems. The Flood Risk from Extreme Events (FREE) programme will support research and training that helps scientists and those who use extreme flood forecasts work together. The programme will also support activities that transfer knowledge between researchers and users. Research outputs should help develop improved forecasts, and better ways to deal with floods.

Researchers have been asked to engage stakeholders, such as government agencies, research organisations and private sector organisations, when developing research proposals. We anticipate that results of the programme will influence developing policy and add to our knowledge of how to address practical problems.

Stakeholder groups are represented on the programme's steering committee. The programme's portfolio of projects will including research that provides knowledge with clear uses, either directly (eg through consultancies, patents or new or improved operational services) or indirectly (eg feeding into policy-making processes or through training young researchers).
