Nuclear waste encapsulation

The UK government wants to know the best ways to encapsulate high-level nuclear waste for long-term storage.

The e-Minerals team explored encapsulation within ceramic materials by running extremely large simulations of the atomic-scale processes that occur within radioactive materials when they decay.

In some cases the ceramic materials remain damaged by these processes for incredibly long times, and in other cases they repair very quickly.

Researchers now have a better understanding of the major factors that govern these processes, allowing them to say which materials are better than others for nuclear encapsulation.
