Understanding minerals: e-Minerals
The e-Minerals project used computer simulations to understand a range of environmental processes at a molecular scale. Scientists now have a better understanding of how pollution moves through soils and groundwater; the long-term encapsulation of nuclear waste; minerals in the inner Earth; and how minerals and fluids interact.
Key outcomes
- Understanding how arsenic behaves in the environment
- Increased knowledge of how toxic molecules are absorbed onto soil particles
- How materials used to encapsulate nuclear waste respond to radioactive decay
- Discovering why some minerals soften under compression
- Using knowledge from the e-Minerals project
