Visualisations from the internet cafe
Almost everyone now uses the web to discover and download all kinds of information, but what if you want to hunt through terabytes of environmental data to find just the feature you're looking for?
Downloading an entire dataset is time consuming but luckily recent advances in web technology mean that scientists can now interactively visualise this data in their web browser - even from internet cafes in far-flung corners of the Earth.
The Reading e-Science Centre has developed a number of data exploration and visualisation websites. One site, Godiva2, allows scientists to explore environmental datasets from numerical models and satellites through an interactive, zoomable online map.
Other research groups are now using this technology.
