Special e-Science edition of a Royal Society journal published

The Royal Society has just published a special issue of its journal Philosophical Transactions A that focuses on a highly successful discussion meeting featuring the NERC e-Science programme.

The internet has changed not only the way society operates but has also transformed how scientists work. The growth in the raw power of computers and the ways in which this power can be harnessed allows new problems to be modelled and old issues to be studied in greater detail than ever before.

NERC has been an enthusiastic participant in this e-Science revolution. The environmental science community faces complex and often unique challenges relating to the Earth's system, and we need answers sooner rather than later.

This special issue journal contains contributions from speakers and presenters at the April 2008 'Environmental e-Science Revolution' discussion meeting, at which the following goals were addressed:

  • Highlight how the computing and information science revolution of recent years is changing the way that environmental research is undertaken
  • Bring together scientists and their user communities to demonstrate how e-Science can facilitate truly interdisciplinary and translational research
  • Summarise the achievements of the first generation of environmental e-Science projects funded by the NERC e-Science programme

The journal is now available to order in hard copy from the Royal Society website and is also available online as an open source journal.

The NERC e-Science programme is part of an interdisciplinary e-Science programme involving all the UK Research Councils.

The April 2008 meeting was a two day event which involved cross-disciplinary talks and discussion from world-leading environmental e-Scientists, plus an interactive poster session highlighting the key outcomes from the projects that have been funded by the NERC e-Science programme.
