Environmental Exposure & Health Initiative (EEHI)

Announcement of Opportunity

This call is now closed. The details of the Announcement of Opportunity can be found below.

Living with Environmental Change logo

A joint initiative supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Department of Health (DH), Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), with additional strategic support from the Department for Transport, Environment Agency, Food Standards Agency, Health Protection Agency, Scotland & Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and UK Water Industry Research.

Under this initiative the above partners invite high quality, innovative and interdisciplinary proposals that bridge the interface between research, policy and practice, and the translation of research results for improved environmental management policies. The initiative seeks to support truly integrative and collaborative research programmes that tackle real world questions addressing the interconnections and pathways between environmental pollutants and stressors, exposures, early effects (eg biomarkers) and health outcomes in humans, including variations in susceptibility and the definition of health risks, with the aim to advance the development of evidence based policies.

The call for proposals is launched under the umbrella of the Living With Environmental Change (LWEC) partnership. The call will contribute to the LWEC objective to protect human health by predicting how environmental hazards will alter under forthcoming environmental change scenarios. To fulfil this objective it is crucial to gain a better understanding of the relationship between environmental quality and human/ecosystems' health.

Up to £8-10m funding is available to support four to six large strategic collaborative programmes for up to four years. It is expected that these will provide leadership in focussed aspects of environmental health research and are sustainable in the medium to longer term by attracting grant funding from other sources.

The initiative will comprise an outline and full application stage. Outline proposals will be considered by a specifically convened multi-disciplinary panel and applicants will be short-listed for the invitation of full proposals. The full proposals will be peer reviewed and assessed by the Final Assessment Panel, which will make funding recommendations to the funding partners.

Please see the Announcement of Opportunity document below for full details of the call.
