Programme background
NERC's goal is to quantify the risks and understand the response of marine and terrestrial ecosystems to CO2 leakage. The technology 'push' in this area has revealed gaps in our understanding of the environmental implications of CO2 storage as technologies move from design to implementation.
Without action now, CCS will go ahead without fundamental research to understand the environmental implications of storage. Prioritisation of this action can help ensure that human and financial resources are not wasted on ineffective approaches.
NERC and EPSRC co-funded the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Consortium (UKCCSC) from their 2002 Spending Review allocation for energy. Recently, under the Research Councils' Energy Programme, NERC and EPSRC have each funded one consortium project after an announcement of opportunity was issued in July 2009.
