Arctic Research Programme
First funding round workshop
Closing date: 16:00 on 18 August 2010
Applications are invited to attend a two-day interactive workshop to aid the development of research proposals to address the science topics posed within the four objectives of the Arctic Research Programme.
The workshop will provide further details about the developing programme and in particular the first funding round; its aims and scope and the application process. It will allow those intending to submit full proposals to discuss collaborations and potential links between projects, and seek feedback from the Programme Advisory Group.
Date of Workshop: 29-30 September 2010
Application closing date: 16:00 on 18 August 2010
Venue: Warwick University, Scarman Conference Centre
Introduction
NERC has allocated up to £10m for the first funding round of the new £15m Arctic programme, which directly relates to the delivery of NERC strategy. Its overarching aim is to improve capability to predict changes in the Arctic, particularly over timescales of months to decades, including regional impacts and the potential for feedbacks on the global Earth system.
Further information on the Arctic Programme's first funding round can be found in the Announcement of Opportunity.
Information on the Arctic Programme in general can be accessed from the science and implementation plans.
The workshop aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of proposals to the programme by providing the opportunity to:
- Discuss the science plan and the general scope of the first funding round
- Share information about proposed projects
- Receive guidance on Arctic fieldwork and facilities and discuss how projects might work together
- Receive guidance on knowledge exchange in the programme
- Explore international opportunities
- See outputs of the preliminary study Identifying uncertainties in Arctic climate predictions
- Network and form collaborations and links between proposed projects
The event
The workshop will run over two days with up to 100 delegates. The outline agenda is as follows:
Day 1
- Estimated start time 12:00
- General background and introduction to the programme and application procedures for the first funding round
- 5 minute presentations of proposed research
- Results of preliminary study Identifying uncertainties in Arctic climate predictions
Day 2
- Accessing Arctic facilities and logistics
- International opportunities
- Knowledge exchange
- Breakout sessions
- Estimated meeting close 16:00
There will also be informal networking sessions throughout the meeting.
Location and date
This workshop will take place at the University of Warwick, Scarman Conference Centre on 29-30 September 2010. An application will be taken to mean availability for these dates, and a definite commitment to attend. We will send out full details of the venue, and a final agenda to all participants.
NERC will cover costs for accommodation and meals incurred attending the workshop, but delegates will be expected to pay their own travel costs.
Application procedure
Who should apply?
Individuals submitting Expressions of Interest (EoI) to the programme's first funding round should strongly consider applying to attend the workshop. However please note that spaces at the event are limited, so the numbers attending from each EoI may have to be limited.
Stakeholders with interests in the Arctic (eg from government departments, NGOs, industry) are also invited to apply to attend, particularly if they are hoping to be involved in the programme as project partners.
We encourage applications from all relevant research areas across the natural environmental sciences, including those who have not previously worked on the Arctic or are seeking to form new collaborations.
How to apply
We invite applications from individual academic researchers and stakeholders. An applicant cannot ask someone else in their research group to take up their place at the workshop. The Programme Executive Board will identify up to 100 participants to take part in the workshop, seeking to ensure that a balance of sectors, disciplines and proposed projects teams are represented.
Applicants should complete the online registration form by 16:00 on 18 August 2010.
We will inform applicants by 3 September 2010 of the outcome of the selection process for the workshop.
