Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group
Announcement of Opportunity: Postdoctoral research fellows
Closing date: 16:00 on 8 December 2011
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) are jointly funding a network with the high-level science goal of understanding the opportunities and risks to the quality of freshwater and marine environments of using algal biomass as a source of renewable energy. It is entitled the 'Special Interest Group in Algal Bioenergy - A joint network between NERC and TSB' (AB-SIG).
This is an Announcement of Opportunity for two research fellowship posts at postdoctoral level that are being funded by NERC as part of developing the AB-SIG. The funding of this network will also contribute to activities and also fund an Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group Director and a specific AB-SIG knowledge exchange (KE) fellow.
One AB-SIG fellowship will be awarded for work on microalgae and the other for work on macroalgae.
The scope of the projects for both award holders will be based on the need to take a whole systems view of the field; that is, with regard to how other disciplinary areas, such as engineering and socio-economic aspects, impinge on the environmental focus of the work to be done.
NERC wishes to emphasise that applications for the AB-SIG fellowships must demonstrate the high standard of project proposal that are required under the NERC Postdoctoral Fellowships scheme. Note that while these fellowships are similar to the standard NERC Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme, they have a number of key differences:
- the AB-SIG fellows will be for two years only (not three years);
- while the awards will be primarily for research, knowledge exchange (KE) aspects will also be of high importance and proposals must convincingly set out the arrangements by which the fellow would ensure that engagement with industry is an integral adjunct to their research programme;
- the AB-SIG fellows will be expected to contribute to the overall activities of the AB-SIG as is determined to be appropriate by the AB-SIG Network Director and the Programme Executive Board (PEB).
NERC is seeking to appoint these fellows as soon as possible and will close this call when suitable candidates have applied.
