Joint Programming Initiative

Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) are a concept introduced by the European Commission in July 2008 as one of five initiatives aimed at implementing the European Research Area (ERA). The concept intends to tackle the grand societal challenges that cannot be solved solely at a national level. They facilitate joint planning, implementation and evaluation of national research programmes among European Member States.

Ten JPIs have been launched and NERC provides the UK Research Council lead for the first three detailed below and is involved with the fourth, which is led by BBSRC:
