Draft NERC Strategy for Earth System Modelling - Request for feedback
NERC would like to give Earth system model developers and users the opportunity to feedback on the draft proposal for a NERC Strategy for Earth System Modelling. These inputs will be made available to the NERC National Capability Advisory Group at their meeting in July 2010, when they will be reviewing this proposed strategy.
Responses should be submitted using the pro-forma provided below, and co-ordinated feedback from multiple research groups within a single organisation is welcomed.

Background
NERC is developing a strategy for Earth System Modelling to provide a strategic framework for the long-term support and development of these highly complex Earth system models.
The overarching aim is to secure existing capability and ensure effective co-ordination of activities at a national level. Earth System Modelling (ESM) is central to predicting climate and environmental change, critically important for extrapolating observational data to broader space and time scales, and to exploring linkages and feedbacks within the Earth system.
A first step in developing the strategy is to understand the extent of UK expertise in specific ESM capability and in 2009 NERC commissioned a consultancy company (Assimila Ltd) to undertake this audit of ESM capability and assist with the strategy development process.
An expert strategy group was convened which has used the results of the audit (available below) and appropriate horizon scanning to develop the first draft of the proposal for a NERC Strategy for Earth System Modelling.
Membership of the group includes key experts from the research community in higher education, NERC's research and collaborative centres and the Met Office, and an independent (non-UK) chair.
