Landslides
What causes landslides? Steep slopes and deforestation can weaken soil, making it unstable and more likely to collapse. Drier summers, punctuated with occasional heavy rainfalls, also encourage landslides. Climate change scientists believe these conditions will become more common in the UK in the next few decades, making landslides more frequent throughout the UK.
NERC's British Geological Survey (BGS), which produces landslide risk maps for Britain, has already recorded more landslides across the UK in recent years. BGS's GeoSure project will help predict regions of the UK most at risk from landslides.
BGS has used its understanding of landslides and its geological data to make maps showing where landslide hazards are more likely to occur. Landslide hazard maps help land management experts keep land stable and protect life and property.
