Who regulates GM organisms?
All research activity into GMOs in the UK must be registered and approved. Within the UK, applications are reviewed by the Department of the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and several other departments such as the Food Standards Agency and the Health & Safety Executive.
The Government's independent Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment also reviews applications. Trial sites are monitored by the GM Inspectorate for England and Wales (based at the Central Science Laboratory) or the GM Inspectorate for Scotland (based at the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency).
