Where is biodiversity found?

Biodiversity is everywhere. Wherever scientists have looked for life on Earth, they have found it. Extreme environments like Antarctica's dry valleys support just a few specialist species, whereas rainforests and coral reefs teem with life. There is life in rocks deep beneath the Earth's surface, in deserts, on mountains and on ice sheets. NERC scientists have even found bacteria in clouds.

Biodiversity hotspots

Some ecosystems are particularly rich in species and are known as 'biodiversity hotspots', for example, coral reefs and rainforests.
