Introduction to our research
NERC funds research at universities, NERC centres, and in collaboration with industry. We have traditionally divided our research areas into classic disciplines such as marine, terrestrial, atmospheric and so on. Now we increasingly fund inter- and multi-disciplinary science through strategic research which addresses priority environmental issues, such as climate change and biodiversity.
Strategic research
Science themes
We are tackling some of this century's key environmental issues through seven strategic science themes. These are outlined in the NERC strategy and theme reports. Science themes
Research programmes
Research programmes explicitly address the science challenges and priorities identified by NERC's strategy. They provide strategically directed environmental research, training and related knowledge exchange and encourage national and international collaboration. Research programmes
National capability
National capability enables the UK to deliver environmental science to respond to emergencies and support current and future national strategic needs. The funding encompasses much of the activity that NERC centres provide. It focuses on surveying and monitoring, shared facilities and services, skills and expertise, research infrastructure and related knowledge exchange. National capability
Centres
Research centres, collaborative centres, data centres, libraries and archives are available to NERC-funded scientists. Research centres and facilities
Responsive research
NERC also funds research that explores the most cutting-edge and innovative ideas emerging from the environmental science community. We encourage proposals for adventurous, technology-led and multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. Responsive research
