NERC Council has endorsed the recommendations of a Polar Science Working Group that was set up to establish NERC's strategic priorities in both the Arctic and Antarctic. The report recognises the excellence of NERC research in the Antarctic but acknowledges a lack of a strategic approach in NERC-funded research in the Arctic.

Polar Science Working Group Report (132KB)

In responding to the report Council accepted the need to better understand the existing Arctic research effort and to develop a strategy to improve access to the Arctic to undertake long-term coordinated Arctic research programmes. Provision of the necessary expertise and access to infrastructure and equipment will be delivered through the existing community of Arctic researchers in the UK, the British Antarctic Survey and through international partnerships. Discussions are underway with the Canadian Government to enter into a bilateral agreement on access to polar infrastructure and logistics.
